Why I Love Yoga Pants
Yoga is an amalgamation
of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or
disciplines, which finds its roots in ancient India. Yoga is one of the six
orthodox schools outlined in Hindu philosophical traditions. There are diverse
range of yoga schools, practices, and
goals in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. The term
"yoga" in the Western world often denotes a modern form of Hatha
yoga, consisting largely of the postures called asanas.
As Yoga found it's way into the world,
people began accepting it as way to remain healthy, mentally, spiritually and
physically. It became a medium of healing of various diseases, both physical
and Psychological. With the popularity of Yoga, 'Yoga wear' has also gained
ground- And as long as were talking about 'Yoga wear', how can we not mention
Yoga-pants?
The first pairs of yoga pants by Lululemon,
a premium women’s athletic wear brand, sold in 1998, were a simple item for
women to wear at the studio. They were stitched out of nylon and
Lycra—synthetic elastic fibers that provided the stretch and softness needed to
manage all those 'asanas', resulting in induction of sweat, during a lengthy
session on the mat. Yoga, initially an
excercise and later a cultural phenomenon had yet to take hold. At the turn of
the century, the pants filled huge void for yogis who were simply looking for
an alternative to plain legging. What they were basically looking for was an
alternative to the plain leggings, with a higher end, and Yoga pants came off
as exactly what they were looking for.
A couple of decades later, today, they have
successfully made their places in the closets of all Yoga-practicing
individuals. The immense popularity of Yoga Pants could be traced through the
reports of the U.S. Census Bureau. The
report stated that, in 2014, teenagers began to prefer leggings over
jeans. Gradually, thereafter, people started wearing athletic clothing (also
called athleisure, but, we all know, it’s mostly just yoga pants) to run
errands and perform other daily chores.
Now they’re wearing yoga pants to their workplaces. The report also
reveals that U.S. imports of women’s elastic knit pants last year surpassed
those of jeans for the first time, ever. This clearly brings into light the
immense and humungous popularity of Yoga Pants.
Furthurmore, Many high-end fashion houses
and people who chase mass trends have capitalized and laid emphasis on the growth of the modern
sportswear market, placing importance on technical fabrics and garments that facilitate
wearing them as clothing of daily wear. Market research analysts have founds
the roots of the trend in the extension of work hours in major cities, across
North America, leading to a "day-to-night" than a
"gym-to-work"—while other explanations reflect North America's
inclination towards health and fitness.
Not only America, Yoga-wear brands like
'lululemon', 'Beyond yoga', 'Outdoor Voices', 'Zivame', etc., have tapped into
other countries such as India, UK, and China, spreading far and wide. They've
almost become a trend-a trend that is here to stay.
Yoga Pants, like Yoga, itself, have
constructed a life of their own. They've emerged from a novel, rarely-worn
piece of clothing to an item of daily wear. People, all over the world, are
recognizing their benefits and incorporating them into their daily lives Yoga
pants, indeed, are the next big thing!
